These days, more and more Americans are feeling overworked and overtired, lacking the energy needed to meet the responsibilities required for everyday life. This constant feeling of fatigue has become a part of the American way of life. Research has proven that the same processes that cause lack of energy in Americans can also keep us from getting an adequate amount of sleep, cause weight gain, disrupt hormonal balance, and add a significant amount of stress to ourdaily lives. However, people do not have to accept the pain, insomnia, or fatigue associated with chronic fatigue syndrome andfibromyalgia thanks to the following three step process called “Vitality 101.”

The first of the three steps is nutrition. Good overall nutrition is important for everyone. To obtain this, a foundation product that supports energy levels, such as a powdered drink mix, can ensure that you are getting all of the necessary vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that you need. This drink should include the following ingredients: vitamin A, C, D, and E; magnesium; malic acid; betaine; selenium; zinc; amino acids; and frutooligosaccharides. Just about everybody is familiar with the damage caused by long-term stress, be it nagging worries, lost sleep, or even the early onset of health problems. In today’s modern life it is almost taken for granted that any given individual shoulders more stress in conducting their lives than is considered ideal or even healthy.

While a good deal of stress is caused by worrying about important things like paying the bills or meeting that next deadline at work, recent psychological research has demonstrated that a significant portion of an individual’s stress comes from social anxiety, or the time and energy spent worrying about how one is perceived by others. The problem with this kind of stress is that it does very little to help an individual meet any particular goals and yet it carries with it just as much negative impact on mental and physical health.

Mind Habits, a video game designed to help train people to change their perception of social threats and boost their self-confidence has now also been shown to reduce the production of the stress hormone cortisol. Through repetitive playing, the game trains the mind to orient more toward positive aspects of social life, reducing the impact of related stress.

“There are many possible applications for this kind of game,” said Prof. Baldwin, the principal designer of the games, “from helping people cope with the social anxiety of public speaking or meeting new people, to helping athletes concentrate more on their game rather than worrying about performing poorly.”

In a recent study at McGill University, Mind Habits recruited 23 employees of a telemarketing call centre to play one of their games, which involves clicking on the one smiling face among many frowning faces on a screen as quickly as possible. The new findings appear in the October issue of the American Psychological Association’s Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

The call-centre employees did this each workday morning for a week. They filled out daily stress and self-esteem questionnaires and had their cortisol levels tested through saliva analysis on the final day of the experiment. These tests showed an average 17 percent reduction in cortisol production compared to a control group that played a similar game but without the smiling faces. Since cortisol is associated with heart-related conditions, there could be immediate health benefits to go along with the emotional well-being from reduced stress!

Hold the tension for a few seconds, then let go, perhaps saying to yourself, “relax.” Pay attention to the feeling of release. By doing this, you are basically training your body to relax on command. Another technique is to let a little tension drain from your body with each exhalation. You’ll notice right away that it is easier to relax when breathing out, than when breathing in.

Most of the people who get on meditation do so because of its beneficial effects on stress. Stress refers to any or all the various pressures experienced in life. These can stem from work, family, illness, or environment and can contribute to such conditions as anxiety, hypertension, and heart disease. How an individual sees things and how he or she handles them makes a big difference in terms of how much stress he or she experiences.

Meditation helps to reduce stress by teaching us to switch off from the worries that can plague us through the day. Meditation is an opportunity to spend time by ourselves, without feeling at the beck and call of others. Spending 15 minutes in quietening the mind and focusing on the present moment, makes us more relaxed and effective decision makers.

With the way everyday life can be at times, it seems we all get stressed out during much of our day. Of course, we also know how damaging stress can be on our bodies. Perhaps it’s time to eliminate that stress with some exercise.

I know, the term exercise may not be what you want to hear right now, but it doesn’t mean you need to sweat like you’re in a sauna or feel like you’ve been through boot camp either. It can be as simple as going for a walk to reduce stress.

I don’t think I need to tell you what too much stress will do to your body and your health over time, it’s been well documented and well known for many years. To reduce the stress in your life, it’s going to require you to do something different. That something different is exercise. Every doctor and medical professional recommends getting some daily exercise.

Do you enjoy going for walks? Great, begin a walking for exercise program. Walking is one of the best, if not the best, exercise and fitness routines that you can do for your health. Grab a good pair of tennis shoes and a headset and get on your feet. You’ll be amazed at how the stress of the day simply falls away.

Do you enjoy aerobic exercise? Join an aerobics class and have some fun. You can find aerobic classes everywhere.

Perhaps you enjoy tennis, swimming, golf, basketball or racquetball. All of these activities along with so many others are not only good for your health, but they are great in removing stress from your body.

Even if you simply don’t want to leave home and go exercise and you just want to watch TV, you can still exercise and reduce stress. You can purchase a treadmill and start walking while watching TV, or if funds are tight, buy a jogging board. A padded jogging board is inexpensive and allows you to exercise right in front of the TV.

My best suggestion is still walking. It is the most simple and beneficial exercise on the planet at removing stress and keeping healthy.

When you exercise, become fitter then you also release other hormones and chemicals throughout the body. These chemicals are the anti-stress chemicals. They help to balance and neutralize the chemicals produced when stresses occur. Basically exercise is good for you.

Research has shown the many benefits of exercise, from improving your heart and circulation, better digestion, increases immunity, but best of all a better stress coping ability.

No matter what kind of activity you like to do, the most important thing is to get up and do it. Eliminate the stress in your life with a few minutes of exercise. You’ll be much happier and healthy for it.

Manage Your Work

Work can sometimes get to us, and the only way to reduce stress is to face it. Avoid putting off work because you are thinking of what to do next. Instead, write down what you need to get done and divide it into manageable parts. When you start finishing your work part by part, you’ll no longer worry as much.

Also make a priority list. Sometimes it’s just not possible to do everything in one day. Thinking about how to fit an impossible number of tasks in a day will only stress you out, slow you down and waste your time. Try to put more effort into more important tasks.

Take A Break

Give your entire body a beak. A popular technique is to take a deep breath, count to 10 and release slowly. Stand up from time to time and give your body a good stretch. This will release some tense muscles. Take a power nap, since a tired body cannot handle stress as well as when it is more energized. If you’ve been stressed for a really long time, perhaps it’s time to take a vacation.

Give your mind a break and reward yourself when you complete a certain amount of work. Have a nice cup of coffee or watch something on TV for a while. No matter what you do, take your focus somewhere else. This way when you get back to work, your mind will feel refreshed. Taking even just a 15-minute break for can reduce stress considerably.

If you absolutely must complete your work, delegate! There’s nothing wrong with asking for help. You can ask someone to do your work or other chores that are low-priority. This way you have some burden taken off your shoulders.

Try Yoga

Yoga has been used for health benefits for more than 5000 years. Yoga involves stretching through different poses and controlled breathing. It is known to have a positive effect psychologically and reduce stress. The best thing about yoga is you can do it almost anywhere. You can get a DVD for beginners or join a class at the gym.

Exercise

Exercise benefits both physical and mental health. It includes cardiovascular training, strength training and stretching. When we exercise, our body releases chemicals called endorphins. These are also called happy chemicals, since these naturally make us feel good.

Eat Well

Never underestimate the power of food. If we eat the right ones, we’ll be able to reduce stress naturally. Bodies that are well nourished are known to have better coping capabilities when it comes to stress. Begin your day with a healthy breakfast and maintain your energy levels throughout the day with nutritious and balanced meals.

As you can see there are immediate ways as well as long-term solutions to reduce stress. It’s all in the matter of you taking the first step and really being proactive about getting some peace of mind. Treat both your body and mind to achieve that great quality life you’ve always wanted.

Boost Energy Levels and Reduce Stress Levels by Giving Your Life the Room 101 Treatment

Room 101 in George Orwell’s novel “nineteen eight-four” was the room which contained the “worst thing in the world” and is the name of a popular TV comedy show where celebrities get to air their pet peeves. You can take the Room 101 concept a step further to boost your energy and reduce stress.

As I watched a recent episode of the program it struck me that more of us should give our lives the Room 101 treatment. Another word for the phrase “pet peeves” is tolerations. Tolerations are things we put up with in our lives. They drain us of our energy and they increase our stress load.

They can be minor things like a squeaky door but each time you hear that door squeak you say to yourself “I must oil those hinges”. And that thought will keep revolving inside your head until you oil those hinges.

Tolerations can also be relatively more serious like a toxic relationship. We can continue a relationship even when we know it is not nurturing us. That person is like an energy vampire.

We don’t feel good when we are around that particular person. In fact, we may find that we are not expressing ourselves as authentically as we would in other more fulfilling relationships.

The thing is you could have a more fulfilling and nurturing relationship, if only you would create room for it.

Tolerations can be dealt with. You’ve just got to be ruthless in dealing with them. First of all, identify your tolerations. One of my coaches once asked me to write down 101 of my tolerations. It was challenging and I didn’t quite get to 101 but I got very close. Once the floodgates open, all those things that have been niggling at your mind rush to the surface.

So my challenge to you is first to write down 101 tolerations. You may get stuck a few times but persevere because this exercise alone is well worth the effort.

You see, even if you simply put this list aside and forget all about it, if you review it after a few months you will be amazed at just how many of those items you are able to cross off. Once you’ve identified your tolerations in this manner your sub-conscious mind gets to work in helping you to eliminate these tolerations.

Your aim is to become a toleration-free zone.

The next step is to deal with your tolerations in a systematic and objective fashion. Another of my mentors gives his tolerations the D treatment. So once you’ve identified your tolerations go over each item and decide whether you are going to:

a) Drop it,

b) Delegate it, or

c) Do it NOW

Drop it

For example are you in the habit of saving magazine articles and emails saying I’ll read that later and you never get around to reading them? Then this is an example of an item you should drop.

Let’s face it. Life is short. We’ll never have the time to do all the things we want to do. Therefore, ensure that you have the time to do the things that really matter.

Delegate it

Are you one the type of person who thinks that if I don’t do it won’t get done right? Are you the type of person who tries to do everything themselves? If so, get over it. Find ways to automate some of the things you are doing manually, i.e. delegate certain tasks to machines.

Identify what you are really good at doing and what specifically needs to be done by you. Then be diligent in finding individuals and or companies that can handle the rest. You might have to train someone to do certain tasks but, once the training is done, you can comfortably hand over that task.

Do it NOW!

There are some tasks that, if you don’t take care of immediately, will have serious and perhaps irreversible consequences. You know what those tasks are and yet you procrastinate in handling those tasks. Why? Fear is often a factor and often they are things you don’t like dealing with.

I don’t need you to think about what will happen if you don’t handle this particular task - you are already there. What I want you to do is simply do it anyway. You are going to feel much better as a result because,

1. You have overcome your fear and taken action, and

2. You have regained control over that particular situation.

You will most likely find that dealing with these tasks is not as daunting as you first imagined.

Tolerations clutter our lives and when and where there is clutter energy cannot flow freely. When energy cannot flow freely blockages occur in our system and this results in symptoms of stress, such as headaches, nervous tics, tremors, skin rashes, indigestion, chest pain, fatigue, muscular tension and pain. Does any of this sound familiar?

Then take a no-nonsense approach to tolerations and start the process of eroding them from your life. The more tolerations you are able to remove from your life and the better you become at swiftly dealing with tolerations the more your energy levels and your ability to deal with stress will improve.
